Unit 5 - Coping with distorted reality and denial of reality
Sometimes you can get out of touch with reality. Learn about using your Reality Compass to map reality to deal and cope with it.
Subunit 5.1
Learn about what happens when you distort reality; acknowledging the threat but minimising or exaggerating the seriousness of it. Realistic Maps encourage assertive and compassionate responses. Distorted Maps lead to misleading defensive reactions. Out-of-touch Maps lead to extremely unhelpful reactions.
Subunit 5.2
Learn about what happens when you deny reality; deny that the threat exists at all or incorrectly see threats everywhere.
Subunit 5.3
Learn how to get back in touch with reality. Examine the different categories of mental disorder and how different categories can be associated with different degrees of reality orientation. For example: Psychosis and Dementia are often associated with denial. Anxiety and Mood disorders are often associated with distortion. Personality disorders usually fluctuate between denial and distortion.
